Ci-Tay Songs: MP! checks out some of the best songs about cities!

So, are you lot still obsessed with Taylor Swift’s 1989? Cos we sure as hell are! In fact, one of the tracks that has received the most abuse from the repeat button at the MP! office is album opener ‘Welcome To New York’ AKA ‘the next track to get an inevitable Glee cover’. Natch’. It even scored Tay Tay a new job as ambassador for the BIg Apple. Impressive, non?

It also got us thinking about other awesome songs about cities – or at least with tenuous connections to them anyhow. After some very intensive research on our part (and copious amounts of tea and biscuits) we’ve compiled an exhaustive list of some the best geographical odes to city life and here are just some of our faves…

Will Smith – Miami

A stone cold 90s classic, ‘Miami’ is the perfect, sun kissed jam for any party playlist. WARNING: This song will cause involuntary shaking of the rump-ular area when you least expect it. WELCOME TO MIAMI.

Neon Jungle – Sleepless In London

A weepy mid tempo ballad for the normally fierce foursome, NJ showed they could do sensitive on this stellar album track about the heartbreak of missing someone when you’re miles away. *Sniff*

Katy Perry – California Gurls

Written as repost to the then ubiquitous ‘Empire State of Mind’ by Jay Z, K Pezza wrote this catchy floor filler to celebrate the bikini clad la-deez of the West Coast. This was THE song of summer 2010 and remains an untouchable pop classic to this day.

Amelia Lily – California

Ah, the pain of transatlantic love. We can’t say we’ve ever experienced it ourselves, but former X Factor star Amelia Lily sure has, and wrote a damn catchy tune about it too. The “Ca-li-for-ni-a” and “Lon-don ci-taaaay” bits in the chorus are still both ridiculous and genius in equal measure.

Mini Viva – Left My Heart In Tokyo

One of Xenomania’s most promising acts since Girls Aloud, Mini Viva were a sassy pop duo with killer singles like this completely bonkers dance tune about carelessly leaving your heart down by a river. We’ve often left our own hearts by the Thames so give us a shout if you find them. Cheers.

For these tunes and others, why not have a gander at our Ci-Tay (see what we did there?!) Spotify playlist and immerse yourself in some quality sounds from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Paloma Faith, Conor Maynard and loads more! Have we missed any? Feel free to add more suggestions in the comments below…

The Big Interview: Sophie and the Bom Boms talks writing with Britney Spears and a big blunder with Ke$ha.

Before her current identity, Sophie and the Bom Boms was just a singer songwriter for big artists like Britney Spears, British pop star Conor Maynard and The Ready Set, to name a few. Now, she’s her own artist with the “Bom Boms” being her backing band. After working with Mr Maynard in London, Sophie decided that it was time to make her own music and thus, Sophie and the Bom Boms was born. We managed to have a quick natter on the phone with Sophie about her music, who she’s previously worked with and the like.

This is Maximum Pop!  Sophie and the Bom Boms is on the line! How are you doing?
I’m doing good! How are you?

We’re good, thanks. What did you do last night?
I was in the studio. Working hard! Continue reading

The Vamps, Katy B and more set to appear on CBBC’s ‘The Big Performance’!

CBBC’s ‘The Big Performance’ will be back on our telly boxes soon and this time around, a few of our fave pop stars will be taking some time out out of their busy schedules to lend a hand.

For the show’s third series, choir director Gareth Malone will be gathering the likes of the The Vamps, Katy B, Pixie Lott, Conor Maynard and Eliza Doolittle and help a group of the UK’s most talented kids produce a performance to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The stars will not only be helping them turn out a brilliant performance, but will also be on hand to assist the 11 – 13 year olds in writing the perfect song for the occasion before the finale which hits our screens on August 4th. Will you lot be tuning in?

Conor Maynard

Darryl Dishes: Conor Maynard’s mate used Wikipedia as ID. That’s smart…

The Hits Morning Show presenter, and MP!’s resident pop star pal Darryl Morris is back with more exclusive goss only on MP!. This time, Conor Maynard and his ID Wikipedia page.

Poor Conor Maynard had a bit of an awkward situation on his hands in his home town of Brighton recently. I think young Con is the first to admit he doesn’t exactly look his age and getting into clubs can be a bit difficult, but he has one very useful, if embarrassing, weapon at his disposal.

He told me that a recent run in with an out of touch nightclub doorman, who didn’t believe he was old enough to drink, ended with a friend GOOGLING his name and using his Wikipedia as ID.

It might be a tad embarrassing, Con, but it’s a trick we all wish we could pull!

James The Vamps

Is Neon Jungle’s Asami pop music’s biggest fan girl?

She’s 1/4 of our favourite new girlgroup Neon Jungle, loves bacon, and is pop’s biggest fan girl. Here’s Asami Zdrenka chilling with (deep breath) James The Vamps, Taylor Swift, Ke$ha,  Conor Maynard, Lawson, McFly, Miguel, Olly Murs… in fact, the only snap missing from her superstar line-up is a much-coveted 1D selfie. Next time AZ.

Introducing... Intensi-T

We’re rather taken with new rapper, beatboxer, and fantastic name-owner Intensi-T…

Making his way through the ranks of supremely talented young musicians on the brink of full-on superstardom, we have to talk about one of our favourite new artists, the awesomely-monikered Intensi-T (get it?), a fresh-faced new rapper and beatboxer set to take UK music by storm.

Intensi-T – aka Tom Povey, but let’s face it, you could have Intensi-T on your passport, you’d have it – is a 21 year old up-and-comer who won himself big supporting slots on Ed Sheeran’s latest tour and has worked and performed with the likes of Jessie J, Chase and Status, Nicola Roberts (from Girls Aloud) and Rizzle Kicks, securing his spot as one to watch.

We’ve heard his buzz tune ‘My Drums’ and it’s a cracking, spirited track with vocals reminiscent of Conor Maynard with the lyrical edge and skill of Rizzle Kicks, resulting in a cool hip-hop flavoured, bright song that’s a delight to listen to. Seriously, listen to it once and you’ll be imagining yourself running down the beach with your mates in the summer sun. That’s an MP! promise.
