Maximum Pop! film buff Jon Hornbuckle went along to a top secret screening of City of Bones, the first film of the Mortal Instruments saga. Here’s what he thought…
The Mortal Instruments is a series of books by author Cassandra Clare and City of Bones is the first of six! It’s already confirmed that the second book, City of Ashes, is also due to be adapted into a film and will be released in 2014.
The cast includes Lily Collins (starred in Abduction with Taylor Lautner – swoon!) and Jamie Campbell-Bower who has starred in the Twilight movies and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. If you’re a fan of those films then you’re guaranteed to love Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
The plot revolves around a young girl called Clary (Lily Collins), who discovers she is a Shadowhunter, a half-angel warrior. After a bizarre string of events and her Mum disappearing, Clary must join forces with other Shadowhunters to defeat demons posing as humans.
There are some genuinely scary moments in this film or maybe we’re just not very brave? But it’s jam packed with action and twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. It’s a little complicated remembering all the different groups of baddies but after a while it’s easy to get to grips with.
Yes, there’s a love triangle. But then that’s why we love these films, isn’t it!? Beneath all the action, the scary moments and great storylines, it all comes down to unlikely characters getting romantic and then off and on and off- it’s like a film version of R-Patz and K-Stew… oh wait, wasn’t that what Twilight was?
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is out now!
Here’s a trailer, check it out…
Here at MP! Towers, we love Pixar movies and Monsters Inc is one of our all time favourites. We were ecstatic when the clever arty folk at Pixar have decided to do a prequel to that classic film which is out in the UK on July 12th. Our film buff Jon Hornbuckle attended one of the first screenings in the world of Monsters University and here is his list of 5 things you should know!
Monsters University is a prequel to the original Monsters Inc film so we get to see Mike and Sully as kids and how they met at university. We weren’t sure about this idea at first but it lends itself to loads of jokes which just keep coming thick and fast throughout the entire film.
Mike and Sully haven’t always been chums. They begin the film as frenemies then they are enemies, then friends, then frenemies and finally BFF’s. Phew, and we thought our friendship groups were dramatic!
Monsters University makes plenty of references to Monsters Inc but doesn’t rely upon making cheap jokes or using the same characters. We do get to see Randall as a good guy though and we learn how he became the villain who we all grew up scared of!
The best bits in the film are the Scare Games which is sort of like the Olympics for monsters. Mike’s team doesn’t seem like athletes but they train hard and well, if I told you anymore I might ruin it for you!
Monsters University is out on 12th July and it gets our seal of approval!
Hurrah! Did you win? You did if your names is one of the names here:
Details for the lucky winners will follow soon. If you missed out this time you can still buy the DVD here
Miley Cyrus has been a busy bee, what with writing her new album with Snoopdogg and Pharrell and making all her wedding plans. But she’s also found time to star in a fabulous new film, ‘So Undercover’ which is released on DVD on Monday 1st April. We have EIGHT copies of the DVD to give away to you, our beloved Maximumpop readers.
She may be a tough-as-nails, street-smart private investigator, but when total tomboy Molly (played by our girl Miley) is drafted by the FBI to go undercover within a college sorority, she finds that she’s way out of her class among a sisterhood of snooty, high maintenance, materialistic college girls. However, Molly accepts the pledge to protect one of the society debs, who holds key information which will be used at a trial where her father is about to testify against the mob. Despite being the opposite of her new “sisters,” Molly has to suck it up and bond with obnoxious upper crust trust fund babies if she’s going to succeed in her top-secret mission.

Not sure what to see at the cinema this Easter? If you’re looking for a non-stop action film, then look no further than G.I. Joe: Retaliation the explosion filled adventure that’s full of ninjas, bad ass girls and jaw dropping action scenes.
Jon Hornbuckle was at the world premiere of G.I. Joe: Retaliation last week to give you his verdict.
The film is directed by Jon M. Chu, (the same guy behind Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never movie)and stars Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis alongside Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. HUNK OVERLOAD.
In this sequel to 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, The G.I. Joe’s are being wiped out and the remaining survivors must fight alongside their enemies to defeat an even bigger threat which could see the end of the world! (Sounds dramatic, right?)
There’s some awesome special effects, including a scene where London is totally demolished (scary stuff!) plenty of twists and turns and non-stop action. Whilst it may be cheesy in places, it’s still one hell of a roller coaster ride that you won’t want to miss this Easter!
We at MP! couldn’t get enough of the Twilight Saga, so we’re very excited about hugely-anticipated new film ‘The Host’, based on the book by Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer, which is in cinemas from Friday 29th March. To celebrate its release we’re offering one lucky reader a 16GB Kindle Fire HD with a case and charger and two tickets to see the film. Two runners-up will also each win a pair of cinema tickets.

T&Cs after the jump…
Dreamworks have been busy recently. As well as working on sequels to ‘Madagascar’, ‘Kung Fu Panda’ and ‘How To Train Your Dragon’, they are about to release the first installment of a new franchise – ‘The Croods’.
A full review will come from MP’s film reporter, Jon Hornbuckle soon but first, here are 5 things you need to know about what’s about to become your favourite film.
’The Croods’ follows the story of a cavegirl called Eep and her family as they try to survive what they think is the end of the world with the help of Guy, a boy who Eep has a big old crush on and who can blame her? He’s clever AND cute.
’The Croods’ was originally going to be made by Aardman, the insanely talented people behind ‘Wallace & Gromit’. We love Aardman but the 3D and CGI in ‘The Croods’ is so amazing that we couldn’t imagine it being done any other way!
The Croods is released in UK cinemas on Friday 22nd March 2013.
