Five pop stars still waiting for their first #1
When their 13th single ’30 Days’ bombed out of the charts after approximately 30 seconds, it looked like The Saturdays were forever doomed to girl-group bridesmaid status. But with the help of a TV series, a cameo from Sean Paul and their catchiest release in a long while, they’ve finally broken the curse and can now stand proudly alongside the likes of The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and Sugababes as bona-fide chart toppers. About time too!
So, who does that leave still on the waiting list for entry into the Number One club? Here are a few of the most high-profile residents of planet pop who haven’t quite gone the distance yet…
- He may be the biggest teen pop icon on the planet, but Justin Bieber's highest-charting UK hit, Boyfriend, was held off the top spot by his own support act Carly Rae Jepsen.
- Still, at least Justin can say he's done better than ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. She's only cracked the UK top 40 once so far – when Naturally rose to #7 back in 2010.
- Taylor Swift has had two singles peak at #2 so far – Love Song and I Knew You Were Trouble. But she's still waiting on that elusive first number one.
- Ellie Goulding's cover of Your Song was a massive Christmas hit in 2010, but it couldn't quite sneak past the X Factor Finalists annual charity single 'Heroes'. She's had plenty of hits since, but never come so close to hitting the top.
- The 14-single wait for a Number One might have felt like a lifetime for The Saturdays, but pop diva Janet Jackson racked up an amazing 34 hit singles between 1986 and 2006 without ever getting higher than #2. So take heart Bieber & co. You're in pretty good company…

Lawson dress up as Jessie J. Because, well, just because. POP BITS.
POP BITS. As part of the Comic Relief festivities last Friday, Jessie J dared Lawson to perform a set with different instruments. And they did. Then it got weird. The boys decided to take it one step further and don rather figure-hugging leopard print catsuits and jet black wigs and perform a cover of ‘Price Tag’ in Cardiff dressed as Jessie J. Why, we hear you ask? Why not?
Of course, it was all in the name of charity and you can still donate to Comic Relief here. POP BITS OUT.

Lawson celebrate ‘Chapman Square’ going gold. POP BITS.
POP BITS. We can now call Lawson our golden boys after their debut album ‘Chapman Square’ was certified gold, having sold more than 100,000 copies in the UK. They recieved their gold discs on Friday at a sold-out show in London’s Shepherd’s Bush before moving on to Mahiki to let their expertly sculpted hair down and no doubt get the bubbly stuff flowing. The gold certificate for the boys comes after they recently returned from a tour of the US. Lawson continue to tour up and down the country with the album and their momentum shows no signs of stopping. POP BITS OUT.

Lawson reveal their secret for pulling in America. POP BITS.
POP BITS. Being a band of young British guys that look as good as they sound, it seemed like a natural move for Lawson to make their way to America. Can the US handle another British boyband with amazing hair? But these guys don’t want to be confused with One Direction or the Wanted and see themselves as more of a ‘Maroon 5 or Coldplay’.
They have had quite a meteoric journey from playing ‘rubbish gigs up and down the country’ to performing at Wembley Arena and the O2 with girls’ phone numbers scrawled across their van.
Whilst in the States, the boys have enjoyed success with American girls too choosing to channel their inner ‘Hugh Grant’ and play up their British accents to get what they want. But no need to get too jealous just yet, as Lawson have now safely returned home to British soil to continue ‘The Chapman Square’ tour. POP BITS OUT.
MP!s Fit Awards – Best British Hair
The Brit Awards 2013 contains far too many dull popstars, and far too many dull categories, so we at MP! have decided to create our own awards. Rather than rewarding dullness, we’re rewarding the things that really matter – brilliant hair, odd trousers, fanatical instagramming and omnipresent nipples. We’ll be announcing the categories and the nominees over the next few days and will announce the results alongside the (now largely irrelevant) Brit Awards results on Wednesday.
BEST BRITISH HAIR
Hair has long been a staple of the popstar. We remember trying to construct the Calvin-Goldspink-house-of-cards-precarious-mohawk before moving onto the Mika-chaotic-and-curly styles. Hairstyles can define a popstar and a good hairstyle turns an average popstar into an amazing popstar. FACT. If you’re not spending an hour looking like you’ve only spent five minutes you’re not doing it right. To be honest, whilst the actual music is important, we’d say hair is as important if not more in making us like a popstar. Such is the strength in this category, we’ve had to split this category into Best British and Best International Hair.
- RYAN OF LAWSON – Two of the most important elements of great hair are spikiness and blondeness. Ryan has got both of these down. The platinum blonde shows dedication to the art of coiffurey and his hair seems to defy gravity.
- ZAYN MALIK – Looking through twitter there are literally thousands of things to be said about Zayn’s hair. We love Zayn and his amazayn hair. He’s naturally gifted with thick hair, which lends itself well to his quiff. We also love the nice streak of blonde Zayn added to turn what is essentially quite a simple ‘do into something quite spectacular.
- GEORGE SHELLEY – Sometimes hair can become so big it actually becomes bigger than your face. This has happened to poor George Shelley. But worry not, he still looks very handsome. The burden of his heavy (but immaculate) hair is not carried by George alone. He enlists a team of assistants to help hold his hair up by wires so he doesn’t fall over.
- MAX GEORGE – Controversial. But bear with us. Max George has the best hair in the Wanted. Why we hear you ask? Because he completely owns the whole shaved head thing. No-one else is doing it. It takes a lot of dedication to cut your hair that short all the time.

Lawson: ‘Learn to Love Again’ acoustic performance
They may be very busy becoming global mega-stars on their tour of the US and Canada but those lovely, rocking Lawson boys still found time to film an acoustic performance of their brilliant single ‘Learn to Love Again’ which you can see here courtesy of MSN Music:
If you fancy seeing more of Lawson live then the next leg of their ‘Chapman Square Tour’ kicks off on February 22nd in Manchester. You can see all of Lawson’s upcoming events here.
Lawson’s ‘Learn To Love Again’ video – armpit sniffing and sitting around
As one of Maximum Pop!’s Top 5 man-bands, we love anything Lawson related, including their new single ‘Learn To Love Again’. The boys premiered the video last month and the song has been climbing up the iTunes chart ever since. So, to celebrate the release, Andy, Ryan, Joel and Adam have uploaded this video, documenting all the behind-the-scenes banter and popstar shenanigans from the video shoot, for your (and our) viewing pleasure.
Scenes include a bit that looks like Ryan slyly sniffing his armpits in the background, Andy sitting around for hours in a wheely-chair waiting to be called, and some pretty impressive pyrotechnics, all of which you can watch below.
